Love in a Cold Climate (1980)
The first British TV adaptation of Nancy Mitford's autobiographical trilogy Love in a Cold Climate took the form of a seven-part, seven-hour miniseries in 1980. Set in the 1930s, the story concerned a group of wealthy young ladies and their various and sundry interactions with eccentric (to say the least) relatives and amorous young men. Faultlessly faithful to the source, this series explored the real-life Mitford family's unfortunate associations with Fascists in general and Adolf Hitler in particular, a story element that was glossed over in the shorter 2001 TV remake. Originally broadcast by Thames Television, Love in a Cold Climate was seen in America courtesy of PBS. A 4 disc set

Sadat
Louis Gossett Jr. was nominated for an Emmy for his portrayal of Egyptian leader Anwar Sadat in this two-part made-for-TV biopic. With 4 hours at its disposal, Sadat is able to trace its protagonist from his formative years fighting against the British occupiers of his country. The second part of the film is devoted in great part to Sadat's peacemaking efforts, culminating with his tradition-breaking truce with Israel's Menachem Begin (Barry Morse) in 1978. Lionel Chetwynd's script tends to deal in sweeping generalizations and stock characters at times, but the performances of Gossett, Morse and John Rhys-Davies as Gamel Abdel Nassar fully flesh out the film's occasional superficialities. Syndicated as an Operation Prime Time special on October 31, 1983, Sadat was an unqualified hit--everywhere but Egypt, where the film was banned because of its actual and alleged distortions.

Anna Karenina (150 Min Extended Version)
The best-known of the 12 filmed adaptations of Tolstoy's Anna Karenina include the 1936 Garbo vehicle and the 1947 Vivien Leigh vehicle. This made-for-TV version is every bit as elaborate and tasteful as those earlier efforts. Jacqueline Bisset makes her TV-movie debut as Anna, the wife of 19th century Russian nobleman Karenin (Paul Scofield). When she falls in love with the dashing Count Vronsky (Christopher Reeve), Anna runs afoul of the rigid social structure of the era-and of a husband whose anguish translates into revenge. The teleplay was by James Goldman, author of The Lion in Winter and screenwriter of another Russian-based period piece, Nicholas and Alexandria. Anna Karenina premiered March 26, 1985.
